Overview

Comala Document Management 7.0+ uses document activity to track workflow events.

To access the document activity capabilities in your data center instance will require you to upgrade your data for all existing spaces that currently have a workflow applied to a page or blog post.

  • New spaces automatically utilize document activity

  • Existing spaces, without an applied workflow, utilize document activity on the application of a workflow to a document in the space

The Document Activity Upgrade console in global administration enables you to run pre-upgrade data checks and upgrade your data on a space-by-space basis.

Why run the pre-upgrade checks?

As a global administrator, you can run the pre-upgrade checks in

  • Comala Document Management Server (from v6.17+)

  • Comala Document Management Data Center Only (v7.0+)

Pre-upgrade checks can be run without the need for Read Only Mode to be enabled

The process

  • Provides an indicative time to complete the upgrade to let you plan your maintenance windows

  • Reduces the chances of encountering predictable issues while upgrading

What are pre-upgrade checks doing?

The pre-upgrade checks let you

  • Validate the existing activity in their instance to ensure that the data upgrade is successful, and

  • Start planning your upgrades

The pre-upgrade check identifies

  • Upgrade errors for specific pages in  each space

  • Produces a support package (if errors are identified) to review the validation checks

Both the pre-upgrade checks and the upgrade can be executed on a space-by-space basis to minimize the impact on your end users. These can be run together for each space.

With Comala Document Management v7.0+ installed, you need to run your Confluence Data Center instance in Read Only Mode to perform a data upgrade.

The checks simulate an upgrade of page activity for each document. They then generate CSV files from both the original and the upgraded workflow activity data. These CSVs are then compared and error-checked.

We recommend that you update to the latest app version before running the checks to ensure you have the latest set of use cases.

 

Pre-upgrade check outline process

The Document Activity Upgrade console confirms that the pre-upgrade data check for each space was successfully completed.

If present, the number of pages in a space with an error is displayed, and a support package detailing the error(s) for each page can be downloaded.

An upgrade checks and pre-upgrade checks REST API is provided to let you run both the pre-upgrade checks and the upgrade checks programatically.
