Introduction to the task structure

Task structure or work breakdown structure (WBS) refers to the task hierarchy within a box. Task structure is created by organizing tasks within a box into a tree hierarchy. It helps you visualize relationships between tasks and provides a clear view of task sequences, priorities, and workflow.

The task structure is set up per box and is the same for all users.

You can see the task structure, for example, in the Gantt module:

Configuration

The task structure settings can be configured:

At the box type level - App admins configure the task structure settings for all boxes of a given type on the App Administration > Box types > Tasks > Task structure page.
At the box level - Box admins configure the task structure settings on the Box configuration > Tasks > Task structure.

Automatic task structure

The task structure or hierarchy within a box can be generated automatically by the app. You can set the rules to structure your tasks by activating respective structure builders.

The order of structure builders reflects the levels of the hierarchy; in other words, the first structure builder determines the highest level within the structure.

The bi-directional sync means that, based on the active structure builders, changes made in Jira are reflected in the task tree, and vice versa. This synchronization helps maintain up-to-date and accurate task management, making it easier to track dependencies, prioritize tasks, and manage workflows effectively.

Manual task structure

The manual task structure means that you can position tasks directly in BigPicture modules.

The Gantt and Scope modules allow you to structure your tasks manually. There are different ways to do that, including:

Drag-and-drop in the Board module
Right-click in the Board module
Keyboard shortcuts
Arrows on the Scope module's header
Arrows on the task vertical dialog
