View error messages generated during workflow transitions

Overview

Working with workflow transitions might sometimes lead to unforeseen errors or warnings. This article explains an example scenario that causes such error logs. These log messages help an administrator trace any unwanted errors and aid in taking necessary steps to fix them.

Steps

Assume that you are creating an issue using the Create Issue the post function of the Create on Transition for Jira app and wrongly assigned one of the variables. The following steps explain what happens in such a scenario:

Step 1

As a Jira Administrator or Workflow Administrator:

  1. Click the Cog icon to open the Settings menu and select Issues

  2. Click Workflows

  3. Navigate to your workflow and edit your workflow to create a draft version

  4. Select the transition

  5. Select the Post Functions tab.

  6. Click Add post function

  7. Select Create issue (Bob Swift) post function and add

Step 2

  1. Select the Detailed Fields tab.

  2. Select the following:

  • Project - Enter a project name that is different from the original project.

  • Issue type - "Bug".

  • Leave the other default values as is.

  • Click Add

  • Notice that the Create Issue post function is created and added to the list of post functions.

Step 3

  1. Ensure to publish your workflow. It is always recommended to save a backup of the previous workflow when prompted.

  2. Run a test scenario by navigating to an issue and doing the transition.

Step 4

  1. Navigate to any issue in the respective project.

  2. Transition from Open to Start progress for which you added the post function. You observe that no issue is created in the target project since the set Issue type (Improvement) doesn't exist. Contact your administrator to know what went wrong.

  3. Navigate to Jira ADMINISTRATION > Manage apps > BOB SWIFT - Create on Transition.

  4. Select the Log messages tab. You see that a new error log is created with the required information in the log message. This is because the target project does not support the Bug issue type.

Only an administrator can view the log messages.
