Edit page layout - workflow headers, footers and instructions
Page layout editor
The Page Layout editor lets you add and edit on-screen message notifications that are added by the workflow.
You can add and configure the following on-screen messages to be added by the workflow:
Page header
Page footer
Workflow instructions
The display of each type of on-screen message can be based on the page viewer’s Confluence user permissions.
The number of existing page layout messages is shown in the workflow panel.
Open the page layout editor
In the workflow panel
Choose Page Layout
The Page Layout panel lists any added on-screen messages for your content header, content footer, and for users when creating a new page
Choose a page layout element to add or edit
Only one message can be added to each of the page layout options. To ensure changes are added to the workflow
Choose Apply or Add in each editor to confirm the changes for the page layout item for the state.
Choose Save in the navigator panel to add these changes to the workflow
An existing page layout element can be removed by choosing its name and selecting Delete in the editor.
Page header editor
If no page headers are shown in the page layout panel:
Choose Page Header or +add to create a new page header.
Use the dropdown menu to select the Confluence user permissions to view the on-screen message.
All - Display for any user with view or edit permission
Read only access - Display for any user with view-only permission
Contributors - Display for any user with edit permission
The message can be plain text and/or wiki markup.
Choose Add or Apply to save the new or updated page header message.
Page footer editor
If no page footers are shown in the page layout panel
Choose Page Footer or +add to create a new page footer.
Use the dropdown menu to select the Confluence user permissions to view the on-screen message.
All - Display for any user with view or edit permission
Read only access - Display for any user with view-only permission
Contributors - Display for any user with edit permission
The message can be plain text and/or wiki markup.
Choose Add or Apply to save the new or updated page header message.
Header and footer visibility options
Visibility for each header and footer message can be set using the dropdown menu.
Message visibility is based on the Confluence user permissions.
Header and footer icons are appended to the message in the page layout panel to indicate the selected visibility option:

Different messages can be used in a footer and header. Based on Confluence user permissions, each message can be set to have different visibility for users.
Workflow instructions editor
You can use the workflow instructions editor to configure the display of Workflow instructions in a message panel on the initial page or blog post creation screen. This is particularly useful for guiding content creators through the next steps after creating the page.
If no Workflow instructions are shown in the page layout panel:
Choose Workflow Instructions or +add to create a workflow instruction message.
From the dropdown menu, choose the Type of message box to be displayed.
Add a Title for the workflow instruction (optional)
Add Content - text to be used for the message
Choose Add (or Apply) to save the workflow instruction
When applied as a space workflow, the workflow instructions are displayed in a message panel on the initial page or blog post creation screen.
The workflow instruction message content can be plain text or wiki markup (excluding any Confluence reserved characters).
