How to uninstall the GitHub File macro
Overview
Uninstalling the GitHub File Macro for Confluence can cause existing pages to break if the macro is still in use. This article outlines best practices to safely uninstall the app and avoid unexpected page errors or content loss.
Once uninstalled, any Confluence page that uses the macro will display:
Unknown macro: github-file-macro
This results in broken content blocks and loss of embedded GitHub files.
Before uninstallation
Find affected pages
Navigate to Confluence Admin > Content Tools > Macro Usage.
Search for github-file-macro to identify all impacted pages.
Notify page owners
Inform stakeholders about the upcoming change.
Ask them to remove or replace the macro on their pages before the uninstall.
Backup or Replace
Export affected pages or manually copy GitHub content.
Replace macros with links, screenshots, or static content.
After uninstallation
Pages that continue to contain the macro will display an error block. These blocks must be manually removed.
